Each year, the American Advertising Association chooses the best advertising students in the country for the 10-week Vance and Betty Lee Stickell internship at U.S. media organizations. This summer, EnviroMedia hosted its fifth Stickell intern, Rachelle DiGregorio from the University of Oregon.
A blog by former intern Rachelle DiGregorio
When asked to write about my experience as an intern at EnviroMedia, I didn’t know quite where to start. My internship was a hybrid of art direction and strategic planning, and the projects I worked on ranged from video shoots to new business proposals.
My time at EnviroMedia taught me that solving real problems for real clients is not only more complex, but also more rewarding than the work I do in the classroom (which is usually for hypothetical clients). I think this revelation is standard for first-time interns, but my work at EnviroMedia took “rewarding” to the next level because of the agency’s outstanding clients. One of my leading professional priorities is to help worthy causes tell their story, and at EnviroMedia, the opportunity to promote those causes is a given.
My most rewarding moment was when I got to see the finished product of my work — a branded pen I designed for a client. In fact, I saw thousands of them, waiting to be sent out to hundreds of doctors’ offices to remind women that getting a flu shot protects their unborn babies. Talk about real-world.
I also learned a lot from observing the different ways in which people collaborated. I watched (and took copious notes about) how different departments interacted and worked together to make great work. This better understanding of professional teamwork will be invaluable as I head back to Oregon for my senior year and as I begin my career.
I feel so lucky to have worked with almost everybody in the agency during my time there. I learned something different from everyone and got a good idea of the kind of people I work well with.
So, a big thank you to everyone at EnviroMedia for giving me the chance to join them for the summer! I had a wonderful time and learned so much.
