“Are you crazy?” some folks have asked, when they hear EnviroMedia has opened an east coast office in Washington, DC. Starting this week, you’ll find me based in the U-Street district of Northwest DC.
Between the federal budget sequester and the government shutdown, it doesn’t seem like a place where much work gets done. That doesn’t deter us. We’re bringing our “Change starts here®” mantra to the nation’s capital because we know we can make a difference in improving public health and the environment across the United States. We give a damn too much to let political gridlock deter us from our mission.
I’ve spent several weeks this year in Washington, meeting with elected officials, lobbyists, leaders from business, NGOs and government. The consensus is there was no better time than now for EnviroMedia and Green Canary Sustainability Consulting (sister company) to plant roots in the District. We have expertise in disease prevention and healthy living, sustainability and climate change, which are among the hottest issues being debated in DC right now. Our current clients will surely benefit by our proximity to policymakers, plus open new opportunities for national campaigns.
Just last week, President Obama issued an executive order that establishes a Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. A group of state and local officials will advise the Administration on how the federal government can respond to the needs of communities nationwide that are dealing with the impacts of extreme weather.
Five years ago, EnviroMedia opened a west coast office in Portland, Oregon. It’s been a rewarding experience, and we’ve managed to work for some great local, regional and international clients.
Agency CEO Valerie Davis and I spent a lot of time in DC when we started our business in 1997. As the co-founders of American Recycles Day (Nov. 15), we assembled a diverse, public-private partnership of corporations, federal, state and local governments, and environmental groups to focus on improving recycling and buying recycled products. We’re proud this national event has grown over the years, and is today managed by Keep America Beautiful.
EnviroMedia is especially good at fostering partnerships among diverse groups working to change consumer behaviors. We introduced DC and 11 other North American markets to Daimler’s car2go carsharing service. Through Climate Savers Computing Initiative we nudged IT companies and consumers to “Power Down for the Planet.” With the US Carton Council, we helped competitors unite to increase recycling of aseptic packaging.
We’ve worked with the Manomet Center for Conservation to build bridges between the states of Delaware and New Jersey to advocate for protection of the endangered Red Knot shorebird, and through Puget Sound Partnership, we’ve helped a diverse coalition in Washington state to common ground to improve water quality by reducing nonpoint source pollution.
If you’re already a “FOE”–Friend of EnviroMedia, I hope you’ll send me your suggestions for potential clients. If you aren’t familiar with us yet, drop me a line so I can share how a bunch of passionate, strategic, fun and creative individuals can help you and your business or organization.
