Chain reaction of good deeds in Portland, Austin & beyond

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Judging by the reactions to, and interest in our first Pay It Forward 9/11 effort in Oregon, we’re sure next year will be even bigger and better. Click here to watch the related news story on KGW-TV or here to read the great article by The Oregonian newspaper’s Lynne Terry. It appeared on the front page of the Saturday’s Metro section, with a great photo of a random recipient of a $10 bill, who immediately went to pass it on. Many others did the same. See blog comments to previous posts below.

Austin’s effort grows with staff size

On the first anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in 2002, I think we had seven teams of staff that we dispatched with a $100 bill. With so many new employees this year at our Austin headquarters, we had more than 20 teams distributing nearly $2,500. Our own Kelli Johnson explained the concept on Fox 7’s Good Day Austin.

Here are some photos from the great ideas implemented by our staff:

A high school counselor (l) awards $50 to a randomly-selected student, to help him pay for the senior class trip to Disney World.

A cat named Dash received a new home through a paid adoption at Thundering Paws pet shelter.

The owner of this taco stand and many customers had a nice surprise.

Syralja helped two people by buying them a flu shot (regular flu).

Many UT students were cynical, but this guy accepted a gift card for a foot-long sandwich from Amanda.

At the University of Wyoming in Laramie, organizers of the Matthew Shepard Symposium for Social Justice accepted a donation from Ted.

The owner of this cajun restaurant in Austin provides free food to the homeless. She deserves a good deed for herself.

We certainly didn’t invent the idea of doing good deeds to strangers. And the Pay It Forward movement is based on the great book and movie by Catherine Ryan Hyde. There’s even a Pay It Forward Foundation that we support. All we do is provide a nudge by donating money and our staff’s time.

Mark your calendar for September 11, 2010, or go do something nice for a stranger today.

Some reflections on our 8th annual Pay It Forward 9/11

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Today, Friday, September 11, 2009, more than 40 EnviroMedians in Texas, Oregon, New York and Wyoming set out on a journey of goodwill, in teams of two, armed with a $100 bill and this card:

Then, later that afternoon, we gathered together to share our experiences. While you’ll be hearing more about those experiences in subsequent posts, here are some of the creative and compassionate ways our staff put those $100 bills to work:

  • Purchased groceries for people at supermarkets
  • Funded the adoption of a homeless cat from an animal shelter
  • Provided supplies for an elementary schoolchildren’s vegetable garden
  • Presented more than 100 red roses to residents of a senior center
  • Paid for music lessons for three aspiring young cellists
  • Gave out restaurant gift cards at a facility for unemployed jobseekers
  • Contributed toward physician co-payments for several patients
  • Bought baby supplies for residents of a homeless shelter
  • Contributed to the (Matthew) Shepard Symposium on Social Justice
  • Paid admission fees for people at an art museum
  • Provided flu shots for people without health insurance
  • Helped to sponsor senior trips for underprivileged high school students
  • Provided gifts and bedding to a resident of a women’s shelter
  • Picked up tabs for people at a sandwich shop, taco stand and coffeehouse
  • Made a cash donation to a blood bank
  • Provided free coffee for firefighters
  • Made a donation to NYC’s Ground Zero Museum
  • And purchased a commemorative brick to raise funds for the expansion of a facility for neglected and abused children. The brick will bear the inscription, “Kindness is a boomerang; Pay It Forward.”

Not bad for a day’s work.

Please check back with us in the days to come to hear more about these human stories of compassion and gratitude. Thanks to the wonderful staff and friends of EnviroMedia Social Marketing for making this eighth annual Pay It Forward 9/11 event such a success. Together, we can make a difference in the world, one person at a time. Change really does start here.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Flipping sadness to kindness to strangers on 9/11 anniversary

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Friday, September 11, 2009 is the eighth anniversary of our Pay It Forward 9/11 event. On that day, we direct our staff to take the morning off work, and armed with a $100 bill, we encourage teams of two to go out into the community to perform random acts of kindness for at least three strangers. The recipients are then encouraged to continue the cycle and do good deeds for others. There aren’t many more rules than that. You can even do good deeds that don’t cost anything.

The background:  My personal story on 9/11/2001 was one of both anxiety and joy. Along with 7,000 other stranded passengers and Kevin Jung, my partner, our flight from Paris to New York was diverted to the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland. This small town of 10,000 kindhearted “Newfies” clothed, fed and sheltered 7,000 strangers. Although we were far from our families and many hours passed before we were able to contact them to assure them we were safe, our experience was nothing like the tragedy and fear the people of New York City experienced on that terrible day. Check out this video from 2002 which chronicles our life-changing experiences as stranded airline passengers in Gander.

“Angels of Hope” is an 8:52 video from ABC News PrimeTime in 2002.

Not being able to personally thank all those who helped us, we decided to Pay It Forward on the anniversary of 9/11 each year (see below for descriptions of our staff’s 2008 efforts in Austin). We’ll be out this year again in Austin, as well as our new west coast home of Portland, and we hope you’ll be inspired to join us wherever you are. Then come back to this site to share your Pay It Forward experiences with others.

Pay It Forward 9/11/2008 Random Kindness Summary

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Today, the staff at EnviroMedia Social Marketing spent over $1500 helping strangers throughout Austin.  We’ve done this every year for the past seven years to commemorate the heroes and the lives lost on 9/11/2001, and to remember the worldwide outpouring of kindness and generosity that was directed at the U.S. after the attacks.  (especially the folks in Gander, Newfoundland). As usual, our teams came up with creative ways to spend their time and money.  Below are some stories and pictures from the day.

A New Bike for a New Austinite

“We wanted to do something a little different this year, so we went on Craigslist and found an ad posted by a single mom who recently moved to Austin.  Her bike, her sole mode of transportation, had been stolen and she was hoping someone had seen it.  We emailed her and told her that we would like to give her $100 that should could put toward the purchase of a new or used bike.  We met her at a coffee shop this morning to give her the money.  This afternoon, we received an unsolicited email from her: “I hope you can understand how much this means to me. I am a struggling single mom, and was trying to figure out how I was going to get a new bike. This makes all the difference. My “Pay it Forward” idea’s are brewing… and I promise that something will be done.’”

Reusable Bags and Groceries

“We went to HEB and bought reusable grocery bags for people. We also bought groceries for a young couple with two kids.”

Hurricane Provisions and Lunch at Ground Zero
“Howdy kids-Michelle (my wife) participated too by paying for hurricane provisions for the elderly at WalMart.” Note: This staffer also brought lunch to workers at Ground Zero in NYC.

Recycled Books and CDs in South Austin

“My partner and I plan to visit various used goods retail stores like Half Price Books, Goodwill and Cheapo’s in south Austin to make surprise purchases for customers purchasing used goods and products.

We like to think of these people enjoying their book/CD/shirt and saying, ‘Someone bought this for me on 9/11 to commemorate the outpouring of kindness and generosity between and towards the Americans on 9/11.  All they asked is that I “Pay it Forward” and consider spreading this random act of kindness.’”

Detergent and Cupcakes

kevin.jpg

“Seven bottles of Seventh Generation laundry detergent will help [families staying at the Ronald McDonald House] a lot, including some families of hurricane medical evacuees.”  Note: They also brought cupcakes to the Southwest Airlines ground workers at ABIA.

New Panties!

“We chose Lisa’s Hope Chest for our Pay-It-Forward project today.  Lisa provides business wear for women who have been down on their luck but are trying to make a comeback.  So many of these women don’t have appropriate clothing for interviews.  The Hope Chest also provides image consulting and life skills training…all at no cost to the individual and you don’t need to “qualify” to benefit from this wonderful program.  Lisa told us that the community has been wonderful providing appropriate clothing but one was glaringly absent.  Underwear!!  I think most people are happy to give business clothes but just don’t think about what goes on underneath.  Anyway, we were able to purchase 95 (!) pairs of women’s panties for this fabulous organization.  You can find out more about their programs at www.lisashopechest.org.”

All (Medical) Expenses Paid

“We are going to go pay for prescriptions for people who do not have insurance at a pharmacy in South East Austin. Probably a CVS or Walgreen’s.”

Flashlights for the Hurricane

“We decided to provide flashlights with batteries to people living in east Austin. We thought having this item was a simple way for people to be better prepared for an emergency. Everyone was very appreciative. One lady who was 86 years old said she had never received such a generous gift.”

Foot-long Sandwiches for Unsuspecting Austinites

“We did something a little less flashy this year…. We bought 20 people sandwiches at Subway. The girls behind the counter were not familiar with the movie or the concept of Pay It Forward at all, but were super excited. After we ordered our sandwiches for our lunch, we explained that we were doing something a different today. We told them that we would like to pay for the next 20 customers sandwiches and handed them the $100 bill (plus a little to cover the tax on the sandwiches). They asked more about the program and we explained the movie, what we do and what to tell the people who had their meal paid for, etc. One of the girls behind the counter took my card and said she would call me after they gave the money out and let me know how it went. Can’t wait to hear about it!”

Money for Strangers

cowboy.jpg

We kept it pretty simple.  We walked down Congress and handed five dollar bills to strangers.  We bought coffee for someone, bought lunch for a couple people, paid for a bit of someone’s prescription at a local pharmacy.  One woman gave Heather a hug; an elderly man told us that he remembered 9/11 and 12/7 (Pearl Harbor).

Keeping Austin’s Animals Healthy

“We went to Emancipet, a company…dedicated to preventing animal homelessness and putting an end to euthanasia as a means of population control by providing low-cost or free surgical sterilization of dogs and cats.  While we were there Isaias came in and he was concerned about his Chihuahua, Deede, who may have worms…We offered to put $50 towards his account to get her the shots she needed as well as the surgery. He was very grateful. The next client that came in was Nikki. She was buying flea & tick prevention for her German Shepard mix. We were able to apply $50 to her purchase of a 6-month supply. She was surprised and grateful for this favor and was interested in how it was started. Ted was so moved by the work that they do, he made an additional donation to help people after we had left!”

Note: This afternoon, this team received an e-mail from Emancipet: “Thank you so much for truly inspiring our entire staff and helping our clients take care of their precious animals.”

These stories were reported by the participants at a company-wide meeting today. It was emotional to hear how grateful and inspired everyone was by these simple acts of kindness. It’s not too late for you to do it.

And yet, our staff is concerned about the thousands of Hurricane Ike evacuees headed to Austin. Several of us have already stepped up to volunteer.

Pay It Forward 9/11

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

How can you join us in remembering lives lost on the upcoming anniversary of 9/11? Pay It Forward by helping others.

Kitten Howard of Austin will bake dozens of cookies for local school children. EnviroMedia CFO Manuel Azuara will buy lunch for construction workers at Ground Zero. Sixteen teams from EnviroMedia will take to the streets of Austin to do good deeds in the local community.

The purpose of Pay It Forward 9/11 is to challenge ourselves to look at how we treat strangers, and to help people realize just how far a little kindness and generosity will go. Hopefully, every person who receives a favor will do a favor for someone else in return.

On September 11, 2001, EnviroMedia President Kevin Tuerff was on a cross-Atlantic flight that was suddenly diverted due to the attacks. He found himself and 10,000 other travelers stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. The residents of Gander opened their homes, churches and schools to lodge and feed these stranded men and women and to make them feel welcome during days of uncertainty.

Out of a desire to honor the kindness and generosity he experienced in Gander, Kevin founded Pay It Forward 9/11 on September 11, 2002. On that day, the entire EnviroMedia staff was divided into teams and given $100 bills to spend on strangers. On this seventh year of the effort, EnviroMedia will take to the streets once again on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, assisted by a cash contribution.

In previous years, we encouraged local businesses to join the movement. This year, we’re taking a grassroots approach by broadcasting the message on social networking sites like Facebook. We’re focusing on the difference each individual can make in his or her community and emphasizing that anyone can easily do good deeds without spending any money. If you’re a member of Facebook, check out our EnviroMedia page for more information and ideas, or contact Christine Vrem-Ydstie at 512-476-4368 or cvrem-ydstie@enviromedia.com.  Please write a comment here to give us your thoughts on Pay It Forward 9/11 and tell us what you’re going to do.

Oprah’s BIG GIVE & Central Texas

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

I’ve been asked by more than few people if the new TV show, “Oprah Winfrey’s BIG GIVE” was inspired by EnviroMedia’s annual “Pay It Forward 9/11″ efforts, which go back to 2002 when I wanted to honor the generosity I received on 9/11/01 after my plane was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on its way into Newark.  ABC-TV says more than 20 million viewers watched the first episode of their reality TV show last week, me included. I liked the March 9 episode even better for some reason.

The answer is no, we had nothing to do with this TV show that we’re aware of.  And we borrowed the idea from the Warner Bros. movie, “Pay It Forward.” We certainly don’t own the idea of kindness to strangers. What’s really cool is people who have read about the 9/11 anniversary efforts of several companies have inspired others to motivate their employees to provide random acts of kindness throughout the year.

I was surprised to receive a call in February (instead of September) from a reporter from the Hays County Free Press about our Pay It Forward  9/11 efforts, but the net result was a great article encouraging the public to follow the ‘kindness to strangers’ model year-round.

Just do it: Practicing random acts of kindness in a rough and tumble world

Bottom line- there is no other sure-fire way to make yourself feel happy, than to do a good deed for a stranger. Although my company (& Oprah’s to a much larger extent) helps out by providing cash and dedicated time-off to do good deeds, it doesn’t have to cost anything: Let someone cut in front of you in traffic.  Pick up litter on the street and recycle it. Stop and listen for as long as necessary, to a child or senior citizen telling a story.

For more ideas, check out the list of actions EnviroMedia’s employees did on the 9/11 anniversary.

The BIG GIVE doesn’t have to be that BIG money-wise to be that BIG of a difference.

Please share here your simple ideas of giving “big.”
